Mobile broadband (as the name suggests) is a broadband-speed internet connection accessed via the 3G mobile phone networks offered by Vodafone, Virgin, T-Mobile, Orange, O2 etc. It is the latest technology in wireless broadband and it allows you to access the internet on your laptop anywhere there is mobile phone coverage, even when you’re abroad!

Yes it does work in non-3G areas but it would feel more like a dial-up connection and probably best for emergency use only - surfing Facebook galleries would be painful!
